What factors are used in determining the number of points awarded for a particular finishing spot in a regatta? I understand the tier system, but how does the number of boats competing factor into the points awarded for a particular overall finishing spot? Bob Henderson, Wave #147

Bob -
The biggest factor is the number of participants at the regatta. The more boats at a regatta, the more potential points. First place at a Tier 2 regatta has a baseline of 50 points, but as the number of boats goes up, it becomes more valuable and worth more (because it was more of a challenge to get that place with more competition).
So, at the Mid-South, a 14 boat regatta, First Place was worth 56.12 points. At the Southeast, a 10 (8?) boat regatta, First Place was worth less because there were less competitors.
First Place at a big regatta, say.. 40+ boats can start pushing 70 points. Other places are affected in a similar way of course - I'm just using First as an example.
Does that answer your question?

Thanks for a peek at the "special sauce" in the points calculation formula. I'm sure that a lot of work went into developing a system that made it interesting for all sailors at all the events. I totally agree that points awarded for 1st in a big field should be more than a 1st in a small fleet. What are the break points going from small (5 boats for example) to big (50 boats) I also agree with the points spread for the 3 levels of regatta participation.
The points are a fun challenge and will hopefully lead to increased overall regatta participation as more FW sailors get a taste of what is going on. Bob Henderson #147

Bob Henderson #147 Fun and increased participation is the goal! There really isn't a break point between small and large regattas, at least from a points perspective. The value of each place changes incrementally with each additional participant. First place at a 7 boat regatta would be worth more that first place at a 6 boat regatta, although the point difference would be quite marginal... a fraction of a single point most likely. For the tier 2 regattas, we really think that 15-20 boats is a great goal and makes for a fun event. I would consider that mid-sized. Anything above 35 would probably get into the big regatta category, but that's really just an opinion. The points system doesn't have any kind of breaks or jumps when certain benchmarks are hit - it's incremental the whole time. Regattas that get above 50 boats are certainly big, but I would say at that size, they deserve their own category. Historic? Special? Something that demonstrates the rarity of a regatta that size, the impact it has, and the experience that (hopefully) the participants had!
